In an older, slower time people wrote endlessly; letters to one another, daily journals, essays, lists and a thousand other forms that give us, today, a vision of what their lives were. In our fast-paced electronic age, though, everything is ephemeral. We dash off a quick email, we send an instant message, we build and abandon web pages -- but what records are we leaving for future generations? Weblogs. That's what I think. Weblogs are the journals of the 21st century. For as long as their electronic contents are stored, at least, we have the kind of homey, idosyncratic records of thought, feeling and daily life. Sure, 80% of them are barely readable garbage; but 80% of everything is barely readable garbage!
